What is luminosity

Luminosity is the absolute measure of radiated electromagnetic energy and is the power emitted by light-emitting objects like the Sun.

Luminosity and physics

In particle physics experiments the energy available for the production of new effects is the most important parameter. The required large centre of mass energy can only be provided with colliding beams where little or no energy is lost in the motion of the centre of mass system (cms). Besides the energy the number of useful interactions (events), is important. This is especially true when rare events with a small production cross section σp are studied. The quantity that measures the ability of a particle accelerator to produce the required number of interactions is called the luminosity and is the proportionality factor between the number of events per second dR/dt and the cross section σp.

A higher luminosity means a greater likelihood particles will collide and result in a desired interaction.

Luminosity and star light

Luminosity is also a total amount of energy(light) radiated by a star. The energy source for all stars is nuclear fusion. Stars are made mostly of hydrogen and helium, which are packed so densely in a star that in the star's center the pressure is great enough to initiate nuclear fusion reactions.

To compare stars, astronomers use the luminosity of the Sun as a metric. For example the luminosity of Serius is 25 times that of the Sun.

Luminosity vs. Brightness

Two factors determine the brightness of a star:

1. luminosity - how much energy it puts out in a given time

2. distance - how far it is from us

Astronomers (professional or amateur) can measure a star's brightness (the amount of light it puts out) by using a photometer or charge-coupled device (CCD) on the end of a telescope. If they know the star's brightness and the distance to the star, they can calculate the star's luminosity:

[luminosity = brightness x 12.57 x (distance)2]

Luminosity is also related to a star's size. The larger a star is, the more energy it puts out and the more luminous it is. You can see this on the charcoal grill, too. Three glowing red charcoal briquettes put out more energy than one glowing red charcoal briquette at the same temperature. Likewise, if two stars are the same temperature but different sizes, then the large star will be more luminous than the small one.
