The way to differentiate ideas from your ordinary thoughts. Here is how ideas are born

Updated: 7 days ago

Your thoughts may wonder anywhere from whether to call your crush or choose between vanilla or cheesecake- flavored ice cream. However, this is not merely an idea. An idea is something born within your thoughts that can be brought to physical realisation. For instance, yesterday I conceived the idea of creating a new mailbox solely for my dream job applications, and today I brought it to fruition.

Another example: the topics I write about and everything you are reading are not mere passing thoughts but ideas that have been deeply contemplated and found answers within my mind.

Thoughts are constantly produced within your brain, influenced by your current experiences and environment, and orchestrated by the intricate network of 86 billions of neurons. However, we can direct our thoughts.

Returning to our initial example, I contemplated, looked thoughtfully, starting to apply for a job that aligns with my financial needs and passions.. I further considered the lengthy process ahead, including rounds of interviews and resume submissions before having options. Realizing the need for focus amidst a barrage of emails to my regular address, ranging from family messages to LinkedIn connections, I decided to create a new, professionally tailored email solely for job applications. This consolidation allows for greater intentionality, enabling me to track applications and discern my true interests.

This small example illustrates the differentiation between thoughts and ideas. While thoughts are spontaneous, ideas possess purpose. For example, the idea of putting a note of humour to AI and listening to positive affirmations every morning to redirect thoughts serves a purpose and is not merely a passing thought. Although ideas and thoughts may often overlap, ideas feel like the birth of something tangible. They act as creative problem solvers, clear and communicable to others.

Ideas are born either from a cognitive process, evolving and crystallising gradually and conversly also sometimes spontaniously while in relaxed states.

Remember, thoughts also serve a purpose — they enable reflection, draw conclusions, and spark ideas. Thoughts shape us and lay the ground for the ideas we produce. The quality of an idea is contingent upon the quality of our thoughts, which, in turn, are influenced by our interactions, who we spent time with, where and what experiences we have. As we strive to leave a positive impact on the world, let us recognize that our thoughts are the seeds of our ideas, which, when nurtured, can blossom into transformative products.
